How عالية is spelled, letter by letter

عالية has five letters, read from right to left, starting with the letter ع, ʿayn. One letter, ا alif, never joins the letter after it, so عالية always shows one small gap. Arabic writes only long vowels as letters. The three short vowels are marks that everyday spelling leaves out; عَالِيَة shows them.

What does Aaliyah mean?

Aaliyah means high, lofty.

Behind the Name explains Aaliyah as the feminine of Aali, Arabic for high or lofty, from the verb ʿalā, to be high, the root of the name ʿAlī as well. Wiktionary gives عَالِيَة as the feminine of عَالٍ, high. The singer Aaliyah (1979-2001) made the name popular in the English-speaking world.

Aaliyah, Aliyah, Aliya and Alia: English spellings of عالية

Arabic has one spelling, عالية; English has several. Aaliyah was one of the 100 most common names given to girls born in the US in 2024, in the Social Security Administration's 2024 national file, as copied in the usbabynames data package, and Aliyah, Aliya and Alia are in the US top 1,000 for 2024 as well. They are all one Arabic name. The double a of Aaliyah stands for the Arabic ʿĀ: the letter ʿayn, ع, then a long ā. English has no sound for ʿayn, so Latin spellings drop it, and Aliyah, Aliya and Alia write the same name with a shorter first vowel. Behind the Name lists all three as variants.

Do not build Aaliyah from its English sound. A sound-by-sound converter turns it into ألييا, letter by letter a, l, ee, y, aa, and that is what the rule engine of our own name tool gives, marked as an estimate. Arabic already has this name, so copy عالية.

The singer herself is the exception: her Arabic Wikipedia article is titled آليا, the English sound spelled out, without the ʿayn. To write the Arabic name, use عالية.
