Arabic Vocabulary Lists > Hijri Date Today

Today's Hijri (Islamic) date is in the box below, in English and Arabic. Your browser works it out from the Umm al-Qura calendar, which Saudi Arabia uses for official dates. For example, Monday 5 October 2026 is 24 Rabi al-Akhir 1448 AH. Where a month begins on a local sighting of the new moon, the date can be a day different.

Hijri month start dates, 1447 to 1449 AH

Each Hijri month starts on the Gregorian date in this table, from 1 Muharram 1447 (Thursday 26 June 2025) to 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1449 (Wednesday 26 April 2028). We computed every date from the Umm al-Qura calendar that ships with Node.js (ICU 78.2), the same calendar the tool above uses.

To find any date, take the month's first day and count forward: 10 Muharram 1448 (Ashura) is nine days after Tuesday 16 June 2026, so Thursday 25 June 2026. Years 1447 and 1448 have 355 days each and 1449 has 354. What each month name means, and the Arabic names of January to December, are on our Arabic months page.

Ramadan, Eid and Islamic New Year, 1447 to 1449

By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday 8 February 2027, Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027, and Eid al-Adha on Sunday 16 May 2027. Treat these as planning dates. Saudi Arabia itself confirms Ramadan and the Eids by sighting the moon (Wikipedia, Islamic calendar), and so do many other countries, so the announced day can be one or two days off the computed one.

Why your Hijri date may be a day off

A Hijri date can be a day off for two reasons: Umm al-Qura is calculated rather than observed, and the tool changes date at midnight rather than at sunset. Umm al-Qura is an astronomical calendar computed for Mecca, which Saudi Arabia uses for administrative dates. Communities that start each month when the new crescent is actually seen can land on a different day. Robert van Gent of Utrecht University, who reconstructed how Umm al-Qura is computed, notes that festival dates across communities can differ by one, two or even three days. He lists Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE among the states that follow Umm al-Qura, so in those countries and Saudi Arabia the civil date on this page should match the official one, though local announcements decide religious dates. We show Umm al-Qura because a calculated calendar can be printed years ahead and this is the one the Gulf runs on. A sighting-based date does not exist until someone has seen the moon. The clock is the other gap. The Islamic day begins at sunset, so after sunset many Muslims already count the next date, while the tool, like your phone, waits for midnight.

How to read the Hijri date in Arabic

The Arabic line in the tool gives weekday, day, month, year and era, read right to left. Transliteration on this page uses plain English letters.

The Arabic date for Monday 5 October 2026, word by word
ArabicTransliterationMeaning
الاثنينal-ithnaynMonday
٢٤24the day of the month, in Arabic-Indic digits
ربيع الآخرRabi al-Akhirthe fourth Hijri month, "the last spring"
١٤٤٨1448the year; digits run left to right even inside Arabic text
هـh (short for hijri)AH, the Hijri era

A Gregorian date carries م instead, short for ميلادي (miladi, of the birth, meaning AD), so a printed date line can show both: ٢٤ ربيع الآخر ١٤٤٨ هـ next to ٥ أكتوبر ٢٠٢٦ م. To say it as a sentence, put اليوم (al-yawm, today) in front. Arabic needs no word for "is" here, the pattern covered in our basic Arabic sentences. The digits are on our Arabic numbers chart, and every weekday name is in the Arabic days of the week.

Frequently asked questions

What date in Hijri is today?

The box at the top of this page shows it, worked out by your browser from the Umm al-Qura calendar, in English and in Arabic. To see how the two calendars line up: Monday 5 October 2026 is 24 Rabi al-Akhir 1448 AH. Where the month starts on a local sighting of the new moon, the date can be a day different.

What is Hijri's date today in KSA?

It is the date in the box on this page. Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar for official and administrative dates, and that is the calendar the tool reads. The exception is the religious dates: Saudi Arabia starts Ramadan and fixes the two Eids by sighting the moon, so those can land a day away from the computed date.

What is the Hijri date today in Qatar?

Usually the same as in Saudi Arabia, though the Qatari authorities announce religious dates themselves. Robert van Gent of Utrecht University, who documented how the Umm al-Qura calendar is computed, lists Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates among the states that follow it. Religious dates are still announced locally after a moon sighting and can differ by a day.

What year is it now in Islam?

1448 AH, from 16 June 2026 to 5 June 2027 in the Umm al-Qura calendar. 1449 AH begins on 6 June 2027. The count starts at the Hijra, the Prophet's move from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, and AH stands for anno Hegirae, in the year of the Hijra.

When is Ramadan 2027?

By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday 8 February 2027 and has 29 days, so Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027. Saudi Arabia and many other countries confirm the start by sighting the new moon, so the announced first day can be a day earlier or later than this.

Why does the Hijri date move against the Gregorian calendar?

A Hijri year is twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, 354 or 355 days in all. In Umm al-Qura, 1447 and 1448 AH have 355 days and 1449 AH has 354. The Gregorian year is 365 or 366 days, so each Hijri year, and Ramadan with it, starts 10 or 11 days earlier than the year before.
