Arabic Vocabulary Lists > Eid al-Adha 2027
Eid al-Adha 2027 is Sunday 16 May by Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar, with the Day of Arafah on Saturday 15 May. Türkiye's Diyanet and Indonesia's Muhammadiyah publish the same days. The public holiday lists of Indonesia and Singapore put Eid on Monday 17 May, because there the new moon is born too close to sunset to be seen.
Eid al-Adha 2027 by calendar authority
Three calendars put the Day of Arafah on Saturday 15 May 2027 and Eid al-Adha on Sunday 16 May; two governments list Monday 17 May as the holiday. Saudi Arabia announces its Hajj dates only after the new crescent is looked for.
| Authority | Method | Day of Arafah | Eid al-Adha | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia) | Calculated in advance for Mecca | Saturday 15 May | Sunday 16 May | Computed with the Umm al-Qura calendar built into Node.js, as in our tool for today's Hijri date |
| Diyanet (Türkiye) | Published list of religious days | Saturday 15 May (arefe) | Sunday 16 May; Kurban Bayramı lasts to Wednesday 19 May | Diyanet, 2027 Dini Günler Listesi |
| Muhammadiyah (Indonesia) | KHGT, one calculated calendar for the whole world | Saturday 15 May | Sunday 16 May; days of tashriq 17 to 19 May | Muhammadiyah, KHGT calendar 1448 (PDF) |
| Government of Indonesia | National holiday decree of 15 September 2026; the final date is set by the Minister of Religious Affairs | Not in the decree | Monday 17 May; Tuesday 18 May is an extra day off | Setneg, SKB 3 Menteri 2027 |
| Singapore | Public holiday list (Hari Raya Haji) | Not listed | Monday 17 May | Ministry of Manpower, public holidays |
The Fiqh Council of North America gives no Eid al-Adha date. Its calendar puts 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1448 on Friday 7 May, as Umm al-Qura does, and says Eid al-Adha "will be the day after Yawm ‘Arafah as determined by the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia". North American mosques that follow the council wait for that announcement.
Why some say 16 May and others 17 May
The split comes from one evening, Thursday 6 May 2027. The new moon falls at 10:59 UT that day (International Astronomy Center): 13:59 in Mecca, 17:59 in Jakarta.
In Mecca the sun sets at 18:48, when the moon is almost five hours old. Umm al-Qura starts a month when the new moon comes before sunset and the moon sets after the sun at Mecca (Wikipedia, Islamic calendar), so Dhu al-Hijjah begins on Friday 7 May and Eid is the 16th.
In Jakarta the sun sets at 17:45, 14 minutes before the new moon; in Singapore at 19:06, when the moon is 7 minutes old. No crescent can be seen that young, and Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs starts a month only when the moon stands at least 3° above the horizon and 6.4° from the sun at sunset (CNN Indonesia, 2022). So the month before runs to 30 days, Dhu al-Hijjah begins on Saturday 8 May, and Eid is Monday 17 May. We computed the sunsets with the NOAA solar equations.
Saudi Arabia fixes the Hajj by sighting, so its announcement can still differ from its printed calendar: if the crescent is not seen on 6 May, Arafah moves to Sunday 16 May and Eid to Monday 17 May. Plan with the 16th and keep the 17th free.
Hajj 2027 dates, day by day
The Hajj rites of 2027 run from Friday 14 May (8 Dhu al-Hijjah 1448) to Wednesday 19 May (13 Dhu al-Hijjah) by the Umm al-Qura calendar. The rites follow Wikipedia's Hajj article.
| Hijri date | Arabic | Name (meaning) | What pilgrims do | Umm al-Qura | One day later |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 Dhu al-Hijjah | يَوْمُ التَّرْوِيَةِ | yawm al-tarwiya (the day of drawing water) | Go to Mina after the morning prayer and spend the day there | Fri 14 May | Sat 15 May |
| 9 Dhu al-Hijjah | يوم عرفة | yawm ʿArafa (the day of Arafah) | Stand at Arafat in the afternoon; after sunset, go to Muzdalifah to sleep and gather pebbles | Sat 15 May | Sun 16 May |
| 10 Dhu al-Hijjah | يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ | yawm al-nahr (the day of sacrifice), Eid al-Adha | Stone the largest pillar, sacrifice, shave or trim the hair, circle the Kaaba (tawaf al-ifada) | Sun 16 May | Mon 17 May |
| 11 Dhu al-Hijjah | أَيَّامُ التَّشْرِيقِ | ayyam al-tashriq (the days of tashriq), first day | Stone all three pillars at Mina | Mon 17 May | Tue 18 May |
| 12 Dhu al-Hijjah | أَيَّامُ التَّشْرِيقِ | second day of tashriq | Stone again; pilgrims may leave Mina before sunset | Tue 18 May | Wed 19 May |
| 13 Dhu al-Hijjah | أَيَّامُ التَّشْرِيقِ | third day of tashriq | Those who stayed stone once more; the farewell tawaf before leaving Mecca | Wed 19 May | Thu 20 May |
The first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah begin on Friday 7 May, and the night of Eid on the evening of Saturday 15 May, since the Islamic day begins at sunset. The days of tashriq are the three days after the day of sacrifice (Arabic Wikipedia), so Diyanet's Kurban Bayramı ends on 19 May.
Eid al-Adha in Arabic, and the takbir of tashriq
عيد الأضحى (ʿid al-adha) means the feast of the sacrifice, and it is also called العيد الكبير (al-ʿid al-kabir), the Greater Eid. It falls in ذو الحجة (Dhu al-Hijjah), "the one of the pilgrimage", the last of the Arabic months. Here ʿ marks the letter ع.
From the dawn prayer on the Day of Arafah to the afternoon prayer on 13 Dhu al-Hijjah, Muslims recite the takbir after the prayers (Wikipedia, Takbirut Tashreeq). By Umm al-Qura that is Saturday 15 May to Wednesday 19 May 2027. Scholars differ on the exact wording; this is the form Muhammadiyah gives.
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ | Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar | God is greater, God is greater |
| لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ | la ilaha illa Allah wa-Allahu akbar | there is no god but God, and God is greater |
| اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ | Allahu akbar wa lillahi al-hamd | God is greater, and to God belongs all praise |
Akbar, greater, comes from the root k-b-r, the same root as الْكَبِيرُ (al-Kabir, the Most Great), one of the 99 names of Allah.
