How سارة is spelled, letter by letter

سارة has four letters, read from right to left, and only the first two join. Alif and rāʾ never join the letter after them, so the name always shows two small gaps: one after ا and one after ر. In every image above, س runs into ا, and ر and ة stand on their own.

LetterNameSound in SāraJoins the next letter?
سsīnsYes, it joins the alif
اaliflong āNo, never
رrāʾr, a short tap of the tongueNo, never

Arabic writes only long vowels as letters, so the short a after ر is a mark, the fatḥa, which everyday spelling leaves out. Wiktionary gives the Arabic pronunciation as /saː.ra/. If the gaps look odd to you, our guide to how Arabic letters join, and the six that never join forward explains the rule.

What does Sarah mean?

Sarah means princess or noblewoman. The name is Hebrew, and both Behind the Name and Wiktionary's Arabic entry give that meaning: Behind the Name has "lady, princess, noblewoman", and Wiktionary calls سارة "a female given name from Hebrew". Behind the Name adds that her first name was Sarai, changed to Sarah in Genesis 17:15. Our Arabic name generator, with a meaning for every name lists Sara with the same meaning.

Sarah is sometimes glossed as "joyful" in Arabic. That meaning belongs to a different word, سَارَّة (sārra), with a doubled r marked by a shadda. Wiktionary gives it as the feminine of سَارّ (sārr), pleasant or delightful, from the verb سَرَّ (sarra), to gladden, root s-r-r.

What is Sarah's name in Islam?

In Islam her name is سارة (Sāra), the same as everywhere else in Arabic. She is the wife of the prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham) and the mother of Isḥāq (Isaac). The Quran tells her story without using her name, as Wikipedia's article on Sarah also notes. It calls her ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ (imraʾatuhu), his wife.

  • Quran 11:71-72 (Surah Hūd): Ibrāhīm's wife is standing by, she laughs, and she is given the news of Isḥāq and, after him, Yaʿqūb (Jacob). In verse 72 she asks how she can have a child when she and her husband are old.
  • Quran 51:29 (Surah al-Dhāriyāt): she comes forward with a cry, clasping her face in astonishment, and asks how a barren old woman could have a child.

The hadith name her. Sahih al-Bukhari 3358, narrated by Abu Hurayra, tells of Ibrāhīm and Sarah passing through the land of a tyrant, and its Arabic text spells her name سَارَة, the same spelling as in the table above.

Is سارة correct for a tattoo?

Yes, سارة is the standard Arabic spelling.
