Arabic Slang > Yalla Meaning

Yalla (يلا) means "come on", "let's go" or "hurry up". It began as ya Allah, "O God", but nobody hears a prayer in it now. In the Levant it also means "bye" at the end of a phone call. Said with a smile it encourages; snapped, it means hurry up.

Yalla in Arabic letters

Yalla is written يلا: yāʾ, lām and alif, read from right to left. The l is doubled, which the vowelled spelling shows with a shadda.

Wiktionary gives the origin as يَا yā, "O", plus اللّٰه Allāh, "God", and lists ياالله as an alternative spelling. Its three senses are "come on", "let's go, hurry up" and, marked Levantine, "bye". The Modern Standard word for "come on" is هيا hayya; Levantine and Egyptian speakers say yalla, as our table of the most common Arabic words shows.

The five jobs yalla does in a conversation

Yalla does more than hurry people along: it also runs the conversation itself. A 2023 study of Jordanian Arabic by Murad Al Kayed and three co-authors, "The Textual Functions of Discourse Marker yalla in Jordanian Arabic", analysed 104 scenarios and found five functions. The examples are ours.

The five conversational functions of yalla found in Jordanian Arabic, with an example of each

Ending a conversationيلا، مع السلامة
yalla, maʿ as-salame
signals that the talk is over: right then, bye
Shifting the topicيلا، شو بدنا ناكل؟
yalla, shu badna nakul?
leaves one subject for the next: anyway, what are we eating?
Starting a topicيلا، احكيلي
yalla, ihkili
opens the floor: go on, tell me
Taking a turnيلا، أنا بحكي
yalla, ana bahki
claims the floor: OK, my turn
Yielding a turnيلا، دورك
yalla, dorak
hands the floor over: your turn

None of the five means "hurry up", so a learner who knows only the dictionary sense can be puzzled when a friend says yalla in the middle of a calm story. Our Syrian Arabic guide says yalla can mean hurry up, fine or goodbye, "depending entirely on tone".

How to reply to yalla

The usual reply to yalla is yalla: saying it back agrees to go. Beyond that, the answer depends on whether you are being invited, hurried or said goodbye to.

Yalla across the dialects, and outside Arabic

Yalla is one of the few slang words heard in every Arabic-speaking country, and our slang table tags it "safe anywhere". Its meanings vary less than its company.

Yalla has also moved into other languages. Wiktionary lists Hebrew yálla, from Arabic, with the senses "come on", "let's go, hurry up" and "OK, let's do it", and Swedish jalla. Yalla is the smallest search in this word family: 3,600 US searches a month for "yalla meaning" and 2,400 for "yalla habibi meaning" (Google data fetched 25 and 26 September 2026), against 90,500 for "habibi meaning". Our study of how the world searches for Arabic has the rest.

Common mistakes with yalla

The first mistake is reading yalla as religious. It began as ya Allah, but it is slang now, which is why our Arabic slang page lists it while sending inshallah and mashallah to the religious phrases.

Second, register. Yalla is informal, and The National advises avoiding it in professional settings and keeping it for friends. Our own view is that, to a colleague or a manager, it can sound like an order. Third, tone. A cheerful yalla! invites; a clipped yalla, yalla means you are late.

Yalla's partner in this pair of pages is wallahi, the Arabic for I swear. For the rest of the everyday vocabulary, see the 42 Arabic slang words and the dialects that use them. Yalla stays the same across dialects while the verb after it changes, as Levantine yalla nruh shows; our Arabic dialect phrasebook has more phrases like it, searchable by dialect.

Frequently asked questions

What does yalla mean?

Yalla (يلا) means come on, let's go or hurry up. In the Levant it also closes a phone call, like bye. It comes from ya Allah, O God, but nobody hears a prayer in it now. Tone decides the rest: said warmly it encourages, snapped it means hurry.

What does yalla habibi mean?

Yalla habibi (يلا حبيبي) means come on, my dear, or let's go, mate. Adding habibi turns a hurry-up into something friendly. It is said to friends, family and children across the Arab world; to a woman it is yalla habibti.

Is yalla a bad word?

No. Yalla is safe anywhere and is used in every Arabic-speaking country. It is informal, though: The National advises avoiding it in professional settings. In our view, yalla to a manager can sound like an order.

How do you reply to yalla?

Say yalla back to agree, or akid, jay (sure, I'm coming). If someone is rushing you, shwayy shwayy means slowly, slowly. At the end of a Levantine phone call, answer yalla, bye with the same words or with maʿ as-salame.

How do you spell yalla in Arabic?

يلا, three letters: yāʾ, lām, alif. With vowel marks it is يَلَّا, with a shadda doubling the l. Wiktionary also lists the alternative form ياالله, which shows the origin, ya Allah. In English it is spelled yalla, yallah or yala.
